After another fun session of reading up on the current comings and (mostly) goings of the search for a spot to put a stadium for DC United, I realized that nothing has changed. It was at that exact moment that I decided to come over here Blog Town, USA.
Ok here's the deal.
United needs a stadium and nobody wants to help them pay for it. It's that simple. And by pay for it I mean that nobody wants to even give them loans/issue bonds/whatever type of payback you can think of giving them.
That's ok. It's been like that for awhile.
So that means we have these options:
1. Victor and Will can just pay for the whole damn thing themselves.
2. Victor and Will can sell the team to another investment group that is better at these types of projects.
Or
3. Victor and Will can move the team to a city/area that is willing to build them a soccer stadium.
I posted that a long ass time ago on BigSoccer. Nothing has changed. Since I don't live in DC, I'm not exactly sure when Fenty's term is up. I consider that a major Wildcard Factor since he isn't even willing to let option Number 1 (from above) to even happen under his watch.
I think DC United will most likely stay but I think the team will have to come up with a better deal for whichever area reluctantly takes them on in the end. Footing the entire bill might not be the actual outcome, but it has to be better than their current proposal.
MLS: The worse and worse this deal starts looking for DC United, the more and more I am seeing and hearing people talk about how MLS is partly at fault. We are also getting a lot of people saying how they wouldn't follow MLS anymore. The latter is fair I suppose. The former is not.
If United moves to another destination I won't be blaming MLS. The blame will fall in exactly two places. It will fall on the team that I choose to follow and it will also fall on the general area that I choose to live in.
That's it. That's the list.
I understand the emotional proclamation of swearing off the league until the end of time. I get it. Look I usually do that myself when Georgetown loses in whichever tournament they are in, but it's stupid and it wears off. I love college basketball so I always come back around.
So my MLS watching would be about the same level as it is right now when United isn't playing in a game. I watch a little here and there - more when it's in HD. I like to keep up with some of the guys on US team. I'd also like for the league to do well because it would be better for the US team as a whole. Hey I followed the US team long before there was MLS. I also like to root against the players that I hate. You know, that kind of stuff.
